Vale Ray Hopkins

Ray Hopkins, Past President, Life Member, Club Champion and champion bloke passed away suddenly and tragically on 3 June 2019. After playing bowls on Sunday he took ill and was conveyed by ambulance to hospital on Monday morning, had a massive heart attack on the operating table and couldn’t be revived. His sudden passing has given us all a great shock. Ray has been part and parcel of our bowling club for much longer than most of us have been members.

Ray has held just about every position on the bowls committee and was always a popular choice with members, he had a great skill in getting things done. He never gave orders, he never asked anyone to do this or that, the guys just seemed to know what he wanted done and went ahead with it. He loved to be with his mates, playing bowls, visiting different clubs, enjoying life to the full. He was a good all-round sportsman and played many sports but liked tennis and bowls the most and was a champion in both.

At the Fibro whenever a new member joined, Ray would take him under his care and partner him in some championship event, say the pairs championship and probably win it with him. He would do it just once then move on to another newcomer for the next time. They loved him for that. Col Heaslip, Ian Stromborg, Merv Elder, Denis Gallant, Ernie Wilson to name a few who were recipients of this kind gesture. Ray made friends easily he had friends everywhere and each of us believed we were his “special friend” and he was special to us. He treated everyone as special.

Rays funeral was held on the 14 June and was attended by a huge crowd of his family and friends. Best family friend and confidant Helen spoke of the good times she and her family spent with Ray and Dot, it must have been hard for her she held up well, but the tears came and why not? Ray was fortunate to have a friend like Helen. Geoff spoke for our bowlers, he’s not so tough, he shed too.

Hankies were out, it looked like sails on the harbour on a lazy Sunday. No shame in shedding tears for such a loss. A cheeky Ray might say “don’t cry for me, friends, just enjoy life cause you don’t know what’s around the b—-y corner.”

The tears of grief slowly turned to smiles in the Revesby Workers’ Whitlam Theatre as the “wake” got going and the happy memories and tales of the good times with Ray started to ease the shock of his sudden passing.

“Everybody loves Raymond”, three words that were never so true as today at this service. For those of us who believe, it would be nice to think of Ray and his charming wife Dot are together now on that great bowling green that we dream about, they were the perfect couple.

On behalf of the Bowls Club President Denis and our members our deepest condolences to Ray’s family and friends. It’s hard to believe that we won’t see Ray again, he will leave a big gap that may never be filled.

Rest in peace dear friend.

Supporting The Bankstown Koori Elders Group

Another group associated with Revesby Workers’ Club is the Koori Elders Group and they have recently completed a cultural Exchange with the Chiefs of Mare and the Ilse of Pines.

This was a first time for most of the participants to travel out of Australia and the skills of the organisers were to be admired. Passports were required travel arrangements to be made and meetings to be planed for both able bodied and some disadvantaged persons. Being the first time travelling there was lots to see and to talk about on board the ship.

Meetings were successful with Cultural matters discussed between the nations and ceramics made by the Koori Elders Group were provided to the Chiefs in recognition of the visit. The Koori Elders Group learnt a lot from their meetings and were proud to be Aboriginal and to share their Culture with the Chiefs of Mare and the Ilse of Pines. Revesby Workers’ Club support the Koori Elders Group through the ClubGRANTS Scheme.

Farewell to Renowned Local Artist

Renowned Padstow artist and local high school art teacher, Moira Gensch, sadly passed away late 2018 at the age of 84 years.

Moira was the Art Mistress for almost 10 years at Bankstown Girls’ High School. Prior to that, she had taught at East Hill Boys’ High School, was the Art Demonstrator at Sydney Teachers’ College at the University of Sydney and trained at the famous East Sydney Tech Art School.

Moira will be fondly remembered by the Club and its Board for the two paintings now hanging in the Club’s Brett Street foyer. She was commissioned by the Club Board in early 1970s to produce them for use in the newly completed clubs Henry Lawson Room and Cocktail Lounge, which opened in 1973.

In an interview with Club President Daryl Melham late last year, Moira recalled that each painting took a couple of days to complete and whilst drying on her veranda of her Padstow home, a possum climbed onto one and skidded over it. She has had to clean it up and partly repaint it.

The paintings are based on short stories by Henry Lawson and depict scenes in two famous stories: The Drover’s Wife and The Loaded Dog.

The Loaded Dog (1901)
A hilarious short story about three gold miners and their dog, which runs a muck with a bomb cartridge in its mouth.

The Drover’s Wife (1892)
A dramatic short story of the hardship of a woman left alone with her four children in an isolated hut in outback Australia.

Moira Gensch  l  08.05.1934 – 27.12.2018
Wife of Wolfgang Gensch, mother to Michelle, Peter and Katrina, Grandmother of nine and Great Grandmother of three.

Image: Photo of Moira at 1975 Art Exhibition held during the week of the 13th Anniversary Gala Celebrations for the Club in the Cocktail Lounge (Wattle and Waratah Rooms) and adjacent room (The Drover’s Retreat). Moira’s work was described as exciting and vivid.
