Rogues Sports Bar Open

The latest club refurbishment, Rogues Sports Bar, was opened Tuesday 14 December by Club President Daryl Melham AM, at a private function that included members of the RWC Darts Club and Snooker Club, for whom both the Snooker tables and dart boards were retained in the upgraded facilities.

Boasting so many TV’s, punters will now be spoilt for choice amongst the walls of viewing pleasure, headlined by 2 superb 158″ large screen TV’s, blasting all of your favourite teams.

A vast array of beverages awaits the thirsty, with various beers on tap – including a Guinness, a delicious cocktail list and even a list of tasty alcohol free beverages that would tingle the tastebuds of even the most staunch of drinkers.

The tasty food menu is available to be ordered either at the bar or via QR code at your table. The delicious American inspired style boasts all of your favourites – plus some new and exciting menu items.

We are very much loving the new addition to Revesby Workers’ Club!

Directors Report Club Journal NDJ 2021/22

Kylie Wilkinson Director

What an interesting and challenging year this has been so far. However, despite the COVID lockdown the Club has not been standing still and has certainly put this time to good use.

ROGUES SPORTS BARWork on the refurbishment of the Sports Bar has been moving full steam ahead. The newly named Rogues Sports Bar will see improvements that members can enjoy like a modern bar facility, two new large TV screens and a reworked TAB area. The Sports Bar will be serving assorted burgers and fries and have a seated area that opens up to the outdoors to create an open and light area to relax in and socialise.

In keeping with the tradition and history of the Sports Bar, the 6 full size billiard tables and 12 dart boards will remain and be relocated within this new space. The renovations are expected to be completed in early December 2021 so we will soon be welcoming back our snooker and darts players and sport enthusiasts to enjoy their new surrounds. I also would like to invite other patrons of all ages to explore and enjoy the new modern Rogues Sports Bar for a drink or a light meal.

BIYANI HOUSE REVESBY

Revesby Workers’ Club has continued to support the development of Biyani House Revesby Women’s Shelter which will open in November 2021. Biyani House is the only facility of its type in the whole of the Canterbury-Bankstown Council area and will offer great support for women and their children fleeing domestic violence. Revesby Workers’ staff have helped tremendously to get the shelter up and running by assisting with electrical work, gardening, replacing lights and administrative support. The Club has also contributed over $130,000 to the renovation and refurbishment of the home and will contribute each year to the ongoing administration costs of the shelter.

SPORTING AND SOCIAL CLUBS

After a long winter without sport, it’s great to see sporting and social clubs back up and running and members enjoying some long-awaited activities on the fields. Our Summer sports like cricket, touch footy and little athletics should all be back this month with our kids hopefully running around with their friends and teammates. And it is also the time for many of our other social and sporting groups to re-commence their regular activities and shared interests with their friends.

POST LOCKDOWN

I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff who worked during the lockdown to ensure the club was in a good position to open again. Special mention to our Executive and the People and Culture teams that worked hard ensuring our staff were kept engaged and cared for during the period of the lockdown. It was wonderful to be part of the ‘Mental Fitness’ initiative the Club introduced in September 2021 for all our staff.

This program, hosted by media personality Gus Worland from the Gotcha for Life initiative, focused on keeping staff connected with each other, let them know they were valued and that their colleagues and managers really did care about their wellbeing. The Board and staff are delighted to see all the members back in the Club again.

We hope you have the opportunity to take part in some of the many activities the Club will be offering over the coming months, or to visit us and enjoy a drink or meal with friends.I wish you all the best for the festive season and hope you can catch up with family and friends at this time, or maybe even commence travelling again for your holidays.

Ian Stromborg OAM Director

As the Liaison Director for Revesby Workers’ Sports Club, which underwent a complete renovation in July 2017, to reaffirm its strong focus on the values of family and local sporting and social groups, I am pleased to update you on some recent changes.Whilst Revesby Workers’ Sports Club has two and a half well maintained greens supporting the Revesby Workers’ Club men’s and women’s bowls clubs, it’s important that the club be established as a true home for all our sporting clubs, which is why we have continued to work tirelessly on achieving this.

With this goal in mind, we have made considerable investments into the Club to make ensure it is a true destination. Earlier this year we appointed a new caterer, Alpha Global Catering. With a proven track record for success, Alpha Global Catering already operates several other bistros located at Seven Hills RSL, Fox Hills Golf Club, Pennant Hills Bowling Club and West Pennant Hills Sports Club to name a few.

The team got off to a flying start, pre lockdown, with many members raving about the menu variety, quality and value.Additionally, and just in time for summer, there have been twelve picnic style table settings added to the outdoor area next to the bowling greens. This will not only provide additional seating space but allow our members and guests the option to enjoy a cold beer and a delicious meal in the outdoors. If you haven’t visited Revesby Workers’ Sports Club before, now is the time.

Executive Report RWC Journal NDJ 2021/22

Dear Members,

At the time of writing this Report, we have surpassed 3 months of lockdown and 3 months since the doors of Revesby Workers’ Club regrettably closed due to the delta strain of COVID-19. The Premier’s daily 11am announcement quickly became the focus point for all NSW residents as we awaited an update on COVID cases and how our future may look. We were extremely excited to re-open our doors to welcome our members and their guests back into the Club.

While operations of the Club in the immediate future are governed by NSW Public Health Orders, we will continue to keep our patrons updated as things change and as restrictions are eased.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to all members for their patience and understanding during the last three months and for your continued patronage as you have returned to the Club as soon as our doors re-opened.

We would also like to thank our loyal staff, many of whom have not been on site since 26 June 2021. When the closure was first announced, as you can imagine, returning to work after such an extended absence takes some getting used to and our employees have displayed our core values (Adaptable, Teamwork, Support, Strength) extremely well during this time. It is times like this that make us proud to be the Community Club that we are.

CLUB RE-OPENING

As highlighted briefly above, how the Club operates in the immediate future will be dictated by the Public Health Order. Management and staff will continue to follow the Public Health Order and communicate any updates to patrons if and when things change. Upon re-opening, only those who are fully vaccinated will be permitted in the Club and only fully vaccinated staff members will be permitted back to work in the interim as dictated by the NSW Government in their Public Health Order to take effect 11 October 2021.

We will continue use QR codes for sign in purposes and our guest relations officers will request to sight your vaccination certificate upon entry as we are required to do. Once again, the Public Health Order will dictate the acceptable format in which we receive your vaccination certificate. We understand the requirements of signing in may cause slight delays upon entering the Club and we remind you that we require this as per state legislation. We would appreciate your patience during this time.

Staff will continue to ensure we are abiding by the 1 per 4 square metre rule indoors and 1 to 2 square metre outdoors and will be enforcing masks be worn indoors at all times. Functions will once again be permitted, however, governed by the same 1 per 4 square metre rule outlined in the Public Health Order. Our future obviously looks somewhat different to the past, but we have recovered from a lockdown in 2020 and we are confident that together, with the support of patrons and our staff, we will return to some kind of “normal” again in the future.

SENIORS’ CONCERTS

Sadly, our Seniors’ Concerts have been put on hold once again due to COVID restrictions. We are aware our Senior Members look forward to this highly anticipated event, however, we are unable to hold an event of this size under current restrictions.

We are hopeful that our first concert will take place in December 2021 and will be permitted with eased restrictions. Once again, Members should note that the Seniors’ Concert guidelines have been amended to comply with COVID regulations and these guidelines are available on the Club’s website.

A reminder that Seniors’ Concert’s will incur a $2 charge per ticket. The $2 will be a donation to the Bill Bullard Charity Foundation which can support the outstanding work of organisations such as the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute. Those attending the concerts will be required to check in via the QR code to ensure the NSW Government have a complete and accurate record of all persons entering the Club premises. We confirm that entry will be determined upon the Public Health Order published at the time of the event.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

We would like to advise members that our Remembrance Day event will still take place this year on Thursday 11 November 2021. The event, similar to last year, will be by invitation only as it will be governed by the NSW Government’s Public Health Order which imposes limitations on capacity.

Based on the Public Health Order which took effect on 11 October 2021, we believe that the event will be restricted to 1 per 2 square metres as an outdoor event and only those fully vaccinated are permitted to attend. Once RSVPs have been received any remaining tickets will be made available to members at a limit of 2 tickets per member. Tickets available to members will be provided on a first in first served basis and proof of vaccination will be required when collecting tickets.

We apologise to our members for the limitations on this event, however, until such time as the Public Health Order is removed, we continue to follow the Order to ensure the safety of our members and staff. More information will be provided closer to the event.

STAFF TALK MENTAL HEALTH WITH GUS WORLAND

On Wednesday, 29 September 2021 we were extremely fortunate to secure a 1 hour zoom session with Gus Worland, Founder of Gotcha4Life – a not for profit mental fitness charity. This session was a fabulous way to maintain our communication and engagement with staff who have not been onsite since 26 June 2021.

Gus who you may also know from his time in breakfast radio with TripleM led a very informal yet engaging discussion on mental health. He shared some personal stories that really emphasised the importance of speaking up if you are struggling with mental health and he went on to outline the statistics around suicide rates in Australia.

We were very conscious that after almost a 4 month absence from work, our staff may struggle returning to full time and their absence could possibly have taken a toll on their mental health. Our staff were extremely engaged with Gus as they heard statistics such as 9 people a day dying from suicide on average 7 men and 2 women with 1 Australian every two and a half hours taking their life.

Staff did not shy away from asking questions and participated in a number of activities to reach out to their support network and also engage with someone they may have not spoken to in over 3 months. The activities emphasised the importance of regular contact with friends and family and how a simple message to someone can really make their day.

For anyone interested in knowing more about Gus Worland and Gotcha4Life, you can find further details at www.gotcha4life.org.

After COVID-19 cut short our plans for celebrating International Women’s Day 2020, we certainly made up for it in 2021! Featuring a cast of Influential Women, our IWD2021 raised in excess of $12,000 to Support Women’s Community Shelters. Photos from the day will be available here shortly.

Directors Reports February 2021

Here we are in 2021 already! What a challenging year was 2020! Dorothea Mackellar described Australia well in her poem, “My Country” with the drought and flooding rains, but we also had massive bush and grass fires, and along came a visitor that we came to know as COVID-19. We have known that there can be pandemics, as they seem to be the main exclusion in our travel insurances. Did we ever think we would experience one? – Probably never.

The rapid spread of the coronavirus and the illness and deaths was something we could never have perceived, but there is a lot to reflect on.

Australia has a lot to be proud of. Admittedly, we are lucky to be an island nation, making close-down a successful option, but all Australians should be proud of themselves in what in what has been achieved. When Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, said “stay home” we did. Medical chiefs became well known faces and Government stimuli were massive and not really expected. Thank God for “JobKeeper” that our wonderful staff, who were stood down, were eligible for during lockdown.

I believe that we have had plenty of time to reassess what is important in our lives, respect one another and become a more caring lot. How wonderful was Anzac Day 2020, celebrated in our driveways! People have been looking after each other, and let’s hope this is the way our lives will continue.

Our Senior Management team displayed their great leadership right from January, when we started to hear about the coronavirus, preparing a plan for what had to occur if shutdown were to happen, then carried the plan out expeditiously. The Club was shut down for ten weeks, providing opportunities for undertaking works which were necessary, but difficult to carry out while the Club was operational. These included the demolition and re-build of amenities in the gym and refurbishment of some washroom facilities.

Of course, all our sporting sub-clubs were greatly impacted by COVID-19. After a season disrupted by ground closures, washouts, match cancellations due to extreme heat and poor air quality (because of bushfires), senior cricket grand finals were cancelled in mid-March, probably the first of our  sports affected, and could not be held. We were delighted that Community Sport was able to resume (albeit with shorter seasons), and with lots of challenges. Probably the last sport to resume was Swim Club in early November 2020.

Limitations imposed for the bulk of the COVID period had major impacts on all our core businesses. Some major changes to the way the restaurants operated had to be made, but how wonderful it was when the Club was able to re-open from 1 June (with limitations) to again see the welcoming faces of our fantastic chefs, cooks and wait staff, who do a great job.

So, what is upcoming in 2021? As promised previously, the Sports Bar is scheduled for a renovation, while still retaining all the Pool Tables and Darts Boards. This will be a great place particularly for young people who are looking for a good safe place to have fun. While the Club will continue to focus on debt reduction during 2021, there is always the need for a capital spend on maintenance, which is never neglected, and which is why the Club operates so well. Now that the major construction phase for the Club is almost complete, members will see our energies concentrating on community matters. After all, Clubs are for the community and are owned by their members.

We look forward to a great year for Revesby Workers’ Club in 2021!

I last wrote in the Journal twelve months ago and at the time we were planning a celebration for International Women’s Day to be held in March. Unfortunately, the 2020 event was cancelled for a number of reasons.

Now as we see a way out of the pandemic which has been consuming everyone’s lives and activities, we are again planning an event to celebrate International Women’s’ Day (IWD) on the 8th March.

We hope many of our female members and indeed some of our male members may be able to join us at this event where we will have several guest speakers and support the Women’s Community Shelter soon to open in the Canterbury Bankstown LGA.

At the height of the pandemic in 2020 most of you will be aware that not only did the Club close but the activities of most of our sub-clubs shut down as well.

This was particularly difficult for many of our older Club members who rely on their Club activities for socialising, human contact and variety. ZOOM became the new norm for meetings and technology was either your friend or your enemy depending on how reliable and efficient it was.

Toward the end of the year some Clubs were meeting again, and most sporting bodies had reactivated albeit with brightly clad COVID Safety Officers in action to ensure social distancing, signing in and not commingling. As 2021 gets underway we are hoping for a smooth “cluster-free”, “outbreak free” lifestyle where we can once again go about our activities without fear of catching COVID and devoid of all the frowns whenever someone coughs or sneezes.

At the AGM last year, I was very humbled to be awarded Life Membership of Revesby Workers’ Club. To hear my life history read out made me realise just what a rich and diverse life I had been leading since coming to Australia back in 1984. To have made the community connections and friendships amongst young and old and to be able to serve the community in which I live is something I am very proud of and will continue to participate in while ever I am able.

Covid-19 Blues

Lyrics written by Terry Semlitzky

COVID-19 Blues

There’s this terrible thing going around

In just about every Aussie town

That affects us all as it makes its ugly way,

COVID-19 is the name, and it’s been given the blame Of infecting people, countries, that abound

In cities, and in Nations where it’s been found

There are many lockdowns and closures at the time With most people trying to toe the line Unfortunately some don’t give a damn

They seem to think it’s not about them But wait until it affects someone close

Family or friends, who do they blame then?

As this virus spreads across the land We all have to make a united stand

In the towns, country and across the sea Plus a concerted effort from you and me These things have all been here before

But nothing on this scale, beating on our door

Social distancing, self-isolation

Are all part of the plan

To try to keep us all healthy

Plus the regular washing of hands As we battle against this onslaught That’s sweeping across our land

When this pandemic is hopefully through There’ll still be plenty for all of us to do Our clubs, pubs and workplaces

Have all taken a hit

But by sticking together

We can all get over it.
