Standing Up, Speaking Out: A Community United Against Bullying
The Light on the Hill sub club hosted an evening of advocacy, reflection and hope at its first event of 2026, the Light on the Hill Anti-Bullying Forum. Held at Revesby Workers’ Club, the event united the community in a shared commitment to creating a kinder, safer future for young people.
Light on the Hill Chair and Club Director Linda Downey spoke about the urgent need for early intervention, greater awareness and meaningful reform to address bullying. Chris Barton, from Step Into Action, also shared his personal journey, reflecting on his daughter’s experience and highlighting the critical role movement and connection play in supporting youth mental health.
A defining moment of the night came as and Q&A hosted by Club Director John Chouiefate with Matt Howard and Kelly O’Brien who shared the story of their daughter Charlotte, who tragically lost her life following prolonged bullying. In the wake of their loss, the family has become a powerful voice for change, advocating for national reforms, including social media restrictions for under-16s and the development of a national anti-bullying framework.
The Club’s Education Committee announced a $20,000 ClubGRANTS donation to the Charlotte’s Wish scholarship program. The funding will support young people aged 11–14 in the Canterbury-Bankstown LGA, providing access to mental health services, sport and movement programs, and personal development opportunities. Charlotte’s message, carried forward by her parents and the wider community, remains clear: everybody matters, every day.
